New Tern Short Haul is a compact, budget cargo bike

Taiwanese electric bike firm Tern has launched a new Short Haul cargo bike, which is intended as a cost-effective machine for shorter journeys in urban areas.

The new bike is a more compact and non-electric companion model to the firm’s recently launched Quick Haul, but lacks that model’s Bosch electric drivetrain. While that model is intended for large families or commercial use, the Short Haul is intended for shorter journeys carrying a passenger or some cargo.

Tern boss Josh Hon described the Short Haul as "our vision of how a bicycle designed for urban transportation should look.” He added: “It's shorter and easier to handle than a regular bike, but it'll carry much more.”

Priced from €1249 (£1070), the Short Haul features an eight-speed Shimano Altus quick-shifter and sits on Schwalbe Big Apple tyres. It will be offered in a single frame size that is 1720mm long, albeit with a comparatively long wheelbase of 1160mm.

The machine can carry a total gross weight of 140kg. Tern says that the short length compared to a regular cargo bike is to help make it nimble and easier to ride in cities, while the extended wheelbase and low centre of gravity aid stability even when carrying loads.

In terms of load lugging, the Short Haul has a long rear rack that can hold 50kg, while a front cargo frame mount can carry an additional 20kg.The bike is compatible with the range of accessories Tern has developed for the HSD and Quick Haul to carry a range of items – Tern’s suggestions include a yoga mat, fishing poles, an ice chest or the family dog.

The accessory options also include a child seat for young people – or even small adults – which can be selected with a fully enclosed ‘Clubhouse Fort Mini’ to keep little ones dry in wet weather. There are also other modular accessories that are designed for commercial use.

The Tern Short Haul is due to go on sale in the second half of 2022, and will be offered in a choice of three colours.
