Taiwanese firm Gogoro, which specialises in developing swappable batteries that are used for electric scooters and mopeds, has created a prototype of a swappable solid state battery – which could result in dramatic improvements in range for two-wheeled machines.

The prototype has been developed in partnership with solid state battery firm ProLogium, and is claimed to offer 2.5kWh of capacity, compared to 1.7kWh for a current Gogoro lithium ion swappable unit. That’s an increase of 40% in capacity and, in turn, range.

Significantly, the new solid state battery is designed to integrate with Gogoro’s existing vehicles and network. Gogoro produces a range of two-wheel vehicles that feature its swappable batteries, and also provides the technology to Yamaha under a partnership. It has built more than a million swappable batteries to date, mostly for the Taiwanese market.

Battery firms have long been working on solid state batteries, in the belief that the technology offers a huge step forward in terms of range and practicality. While lithium ion batteries feature liquid electrolytes, solid state batteries feature a – surprise – solid electrode. That means they can offer greatly increased energy density. Because they are more stable, they are also thought to be less of a fire risk.

Gogo and ProLogium have not disclosed any possible timeline for putting the prototype solid state swappable battery into production.
