Cooper Bikes unveils new electric bike range

The firm behind the original Mini Cooper has launched its new range of steel electric bikes, the brand’s second generation of e-bikes.

Cooper Bikes is the bicycle arm of the Cooper Car Company and was founded by Mike Cooper and his son Charlie in 2009.

In 2017, the firm partnered with German brand Technibike GmbH after expanding its range into the electric bike market.

Four new models make up the new ‘Classic’ line-up, with all models featuring the Zehus Gen 2 Heckmotor, a rear-drive hub which houses the battery and electric motor.

The 250W motor delivers 30lb ft of torque and helps the bike on to a top speed of 15.5mph, while the integrated 173Wh battery allows the bike to travel up to 37 miles (60km) on a full charge.

The bikes also feature a KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) which harnesses energy through back-pedalling, helping to increase the overall range of the bike. Travelling downhill and braking also help to harness energy.

There is also an app which allows you to connect to the bike via Bluetooth, and can also be used as a head-up display.

The Classic Singlespeed CS-1E is the cheapest bike in the Classic range at £2099 and features a single speed drivetrain. Cooper says that thanks to its Gates CDX belt drive the CS-1E is “maintenance free”.

Built for urban commuting, the Classic Ladies CL-7E comes with a seven-speed Microshift rear derailleur and Juin hybrid brakes. The Classic Gents CG-7E is almost identical to the CL, but features a different frame and colour options, with both costing £2199.

Designed to strike a balance between commuting and touring, the range topping Classic Randonneur CR-7E has the same set up as the other 7E bikes, but gets drop handlebars. The CR-7E costs £2499.
