Ten electric bikes we're excited for in 2023

The last 12 months have seen plenty of exciting and innovative electric bikes come to market – and that isn’t likely to slow down in 2023.

With plenty of new technology and manufacturing processes, the cost-of-living crisis and the price of fuel still high, more and more people are turning to e-bikes as an alternative to cars. So, with e-bikes continuing to grow in popularity, depth, and performance, let’s look forward to 2023 and some of the e-bikes we’re most excited to see launch.

Haibike Lyke
While this e-MTB technically launched in September 2022, it’s unavailable until Spring, when it will be offered in three models and price points. The Lyke is designed to be a trail e-bike, with a balanced 140mm of travel front and rear and 29er wheels. The drive system is the Fazua Ride60 with 60Nm of torque and a 430Wh battery. Prices will start from £5699 for the Lyke 10 model.

Volt’s lightweight folding e-bike
While we don’t have any details on a name just yet, Volt will launch a new lightweight folding e-bike in 2023. It’ll come with a torque sensor, a belt drive which is great for minimal maintenance, and a concealed battery. Keep your eyes peeled on the Move Electric website for a review in early 2023.

Vello’s new folding electric bike
Another one where we haven’t got all the details yet, but Vello is set to launch a new Bike+ electric folding bike in 2023 with the big selling point being new manual gears. Riders will have a choice between three or six gears, using a Schlumpf Speed Drive gear system or Schlumpf Mountain Drive gear system. It will still use the same motor and the KERS self-charging technology that helps to contribute to more range, as with the original Bike+ option. We don’t have any news on a price or launch date yet, but keep your eyes out for more information soon.

Desiknio X20 Gravel
As the name suggest, this new electric gravel bike from Desiknio will be utilising the Mahle X20 motor system, which will provide a range of up to 50 miles. It’ll also be equipped with a Campagnolo Ekar groupset, which is exciting to see on an e-bike in itself. The full build will only weigh 12kg, and prices will start from €7495 (£6600).

Mate SUV
One e-bike with a real possibility of offering an alternative to cars for shorter journeys is the Mate SUV. With a frame made from 90 per cent recycled aluminium, a 250W mid-drive motor an Enviolo gear hubs, it’s got the tech and eco-credentials to back it up. The maximum storage capacity is 210 litres in the front cargo area, which can be fitted with a variety of modular options. It’s available for pre-order now, with the final price expected to be about £5600.

Riese & Müller Load4 60 and Load4 75
A front loading cargo bike we’re already familiar with, but with some exciting new upgrades. The Riese & Müller Load 4 range will come with the Bosch Smart System, which now includes the option of the brand new Bosch Anti-Braking-System (ABS). This technology will prevent the tyres from slipping under braking, and will be available across a range of Bosch powered bikes. The Load4 bikes will also come with a 545Wh PowerPack battery or the choice of a larger 725Wh battery. The bikes are available to order now.

Riese & Müller Multitinker
Said to be a real challenger to the Tern GSD, the Riese & Müller Multitinker is a compact cargo bike and a real car replacement. It combines two of the brand’s popular bikes, the Tinker and the Multicharger, and has plenty of rear carrying options. Prices will start from £5379 for the Touring model, and will be available to from February.

Cairn E-Adventure Rambler
We reported on its initial launch back in November, the Cairn E-Adventure Rambler is now only available for pre-order, with stock expected in mid-January 2023. We loved the previous E-Adventure iteration, and with improved geometry and a 13-speed Campagnolo Ekar groupset, it looks like we may well like this electric gravel bike too! It’s priced at £4289 and available on the Cairn website to pre-order.

BMC Roadmachine 01 AMP X
Although technically launched in November, it looks like there’s very limited availability for the time being in the UK. Why are we so interested in it, then? Not only is the BMC Roadmachine 01 AMP X a lightweight electric road bike, but it is the first e-bike BMC has manufactured using the TQ-HPR50 system. This new motor offers up to 50Nm of torque and is paired with a 360Wh battery and a two inch integrated display.

B’Twin Long Distance 920 E Connected
An interesting e-bike in part because it’ll be top sports equipment retailer Decathlon’s first e-bike with an automatic transmission – although we may not get to see it at all in the UK. The B-Twin is designed to be user friendly and low maintenance, and looks like it will come with lights, mudguards and a rack. All other details will be revealed in Spring 2023 when it’s expected to launch in Europe.
