The electric car highlights from the Tokyo motor show

Fresh off the back of the Geneva motor show, the automotive circus has rolled into the streets of Tokyo for the Japan Mobility show, a huge event showcasing the very latest cars, software and technology Japanese marques have been developing in recent years.

This year focused heavily on electric cars, with the likes of Toyota and Honda bringing a host of concepts previewing future electric models. Here, we take a look at some of the most interesting electric cars that were revealed at this year's show. 

Honda CI MEV

The mini electric two-seater has been designed as an urban-focused quadricycle and is built for elderly people who are unable to walk long distances or have limited accessibility to public transport.

The Citroën Ami rival also highlights Honda’s commitment to sustainability, with the CI MEV finished in a special acrylic resin, which makes it easier to recycle compared to painted materials. It even has self-driving capabilities and. 

Honda Prelude

Returning as a sleek electric sports coupé, the Prelude has been designed to “embody Honda’s unalterable sports mindset”, according to Honda CEO, Toshihiro Mibe. Honda also says that the Prelude demonstrates its commitment to the “joy of driving”. 

Technical details remain under wraps, with Honda yet to reveal a timeline for its new coupe. However, CEO Mibe did confirm that the brand was “diligently progressing” with its development, adding that the “specialist sports coupe” will offer an “exhilarating experience” when it arrives. 

Honda Sustaina-C

The funky Sustaina C is proportionally similar to the Honda E supermini and, like the CI MEV, has been created using recycled acrylic resin which the firm says can be used again. The aim of using the resin is to meet sustainability targets and to improve resource circulation. 

Honda did not reveal a release date for its Sustaina-C and did not confirm if the concept previewed a replacement of the Honda E.  

Lexus LF-ZC

Set to arrive in 2026 as a rival to BMW i4 and Audi A4, the LF-ZC is a super-sleek electric saloon that will offer a range of up to 621 miles and will sit on a new electric architecture that will underpin a number of Lexus and Toyota models. 

A number of variants are set to be offered, with the new Lexus claimed to deliver “an exhilarating driving experience” and “symbolise Lexus’s electrification journey”. 

Lexus LF-ZL

Taking the form of a large SUV, the LF-ZL showcases a luxury flagship model that majors on technology, and is set to arrive with a suite of new hardware and software. Inside, the Lexus features an on-board AI generated assistant, which is operated through a huge passenger-focused digital infotainment screen. 

The new technology showcased by the LF-ZL has been created to offer the driver a more personalised experience.

Mazda Iconic SP

Mazda has shared its vision for the lauded MX-5 sports car with the outlandish – and beautifully sculpted – rotary electric iconic SP concept. 

The sleek electric sports concept uses a twin-rotor rotary engine (developed from the MX-30) to charge a 17.8kWh battery. Mazda says the SP develops 370bhp and tips the scales at 1450kg, which is roughly similar to a Lotus Emira. 

Nissan Hyper Adventure

The big and bold adventure concept is pitched as a go-anywhere EV that features vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology, and is claimed to use a high-capacity battery that enables it to power just about anything. 

The interior design also reflects the Adventure’s 4x4, outdoor attitude, featuring a large tailgate that allows for the implementation of a swivelling rear seat bench. This means passengers can exit the cat through the boot. 

Nissan Hyper Force

The outlandish Hyper Force concept previews a future electric performance coupe and hints at an electric version of the brand's venerable GT-R sports car. Nissan claims the Hyper Force develops a staggering 1000kW and is set to use a solid-state battery pack which will be rolled out across the firm's production cars by around 2029. 

Nissan Hyper Punk

The eye-catching Hyper Punk is a radical crossover concept, which is comparable in size to the Nissan Juke and is described by its makers as “functional and stylish”. 

Aimed at a style-focused audience, the Punk concept is said to feartue vehicle-to-grid technology, origami-inspired styling cure and an ultra-modern AI-powered mood-sensing technology which can adjust the music and interior lighting. 

Nissan Hyper Tourer

Set to rival the outlandish Volvo EM90, the equally conspicuous Hyper Tourer has been designed to feature a high-density solid-state battery, vehicle-to-everything charging and fully autonomous driving capabilities. 

Nissan Hyper Urban

The boldly-styled crossover concept previews a future city-focused EV and features a number of bespoke design features that could be seen on future production cars in years to come. Inside, the Urban features a customisable instrument panel and infotainment display, and gets adjustable seats, with the front seats folding into the rear to create a lounge-style sofa. 

Nissan says the concept has vehicle-to-grid technology which can reduce pressure on the electricity grid and allow owners to earn money by propping up the grid during peak times. 

Subaru Sport Mobility Concept

Designed to celebrate Subaru’s rallying heritage, the jacked-up Sport Mobility concept gives a taste of the brand’s future design language and hints at a potential off-road sports coupe inspired by the brand’s rally machines. 

Subaru has kept much of its details under wraps, but said the car has a central driving position for “excellent visibility”, with the powertrain setup so the driver would control “all four wheels”, indicating the use of a quad-motor EV powertrain. 

Suzuki eVX

Meet Suzuki's first electric car called the eVX. The compact crossover is similar in size to the Suzuki S-Cross and has been designed to carry the brand’s “4x4 legacy”. The eVX is said to use a 60kWh battery, enabling it to cover up to 342 miles on a single charge. 

Set to launch in 2025, the eVX will feature a two-speed gearbox supplied by Canadian firm Inmotive. The car brand signed an agreement to work with Inmotive to create a super efficient two-speed gearbox called the Ingear transmission. 

Suzuki eWX

The boxy electric concept showcases the brand’s vision for a new Kei car, and is claimed to offer a range of up to 142 miles. The quirky eWX is described by its makers as a “crossover of fun and practicality”. 

Toyota FT-Se

Say hello to the outlandish FT-Se concept, or in other words, the first Gazoo Racing-badged sports car concept from the Japanese car giant. Toyota says the future sports car will be small and light, with the battery placed low down in the cap for an optimal centre of gravity. 

The FT-Se will use the same architecture as the Lexus concepts seen earlier, with the same platform also used under the FT-3e. Toyota’s sports car concept also brings a new operating software called Arene, which can adjust the cars feel and dynamics depending on driver preference.

Toyota FT-3e

The automotive giant isn't holding back when it comes to concepts, revealing the striking FT-3e alongside the FT-Se sports concept. The FT-3e previews a future coupe-style SUV, which the firm says will prioritise a low centre of gravity and long range.

Described by Toyota as a "lifestyle partner", the FT-3e will sit on the same platform as the FT-Se and Lexus models, and promises a comforting ride a suite of new technologies. 

Toyota Land Cruiser Se

This is what a future all-electric Land Cruiser could look like, with the boldly-styled Se concept featuring three rows of seats and a more aerodynamically honed exterior design that is a significant departure from the recently launched ICE-powered machine. 

Set to use the same electric architecture as the FT-3e, the Land Cruiser promises a range of up to 621 miles. 

Yamaha Tricera

Yamaha has strayed from its regular two-wheeled path with the Tricera, an electric tricycle that features rear-wheel steering. It has been designed with an urban focus and is promised by its makers to deliver “unfiltered joy”.
