New Polestar 5 revealed as striking 652kW electric saloon
The Polestar 5 has been officially unveiled ahead of its launch in 2025, with the flagship electric saloon boasting new rapid charging technology and searing performance that will help it challenge the likes of the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S Plaid and
Polestar’s latest electric car was first shown as a concept in 2020 before making its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2022.
The Swedish marque plans four new electric models over the next two years, including the Polestar 3 SUV and Polestar 4 coupe-SUV that will launch next year. After the launch of the Polestar 5 in two years time, the outlandish Polestar 6 electric roadster join the line-up.
Revealed in production form at ‘Polestar Day’ in Los Angeles, the 5 is the first model to use the firm's new bespoke scalable aluminium platform, which has been designed and engineered at the Polestar’s development facility in the UK.
The most significant technological features showcased by the Polestar 5 is its ability to gain 100 miles of range after just five minutes of charging, without any impact on the lifespan of the battery.
This is due to the implementation of technology from battery developer StoreDot, the firm that has pioneered extreme fast charging (XFC) battery cells. XFC can be integrated into any current battery technology, according to Polestar.
Polestar and StoreDot are currently testing the technology and plan to showcase its potential next year using a prototype version of the 5 saloon.
The new EV develops 652kW and 663lb ft of torque, and uses a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive setup. The rear motor is the more powerful of the two, producing 450kW.
Aesthetically the Polestar 5 is all-but identical to the Precept concept, and retains its sleek silhouette and muscular front and rear arches.
It also features digital wing mirrors, reverse-opening rear doors, and intriguingly, no rear window – which we’re sure won’t appeal to all.
The electric saloon’s body is predominantly made from bonded aluminium, with other elements constructed using extruded aluminium.
Polestar claims its new EV will have “supercar levels” of body rigidity, with the firm aiming to make the 5’s chassis the lightest in its class.
The development of the Polestar 5 will play a key role in the engineering of future models. For example, the Polestar 6 will be the second model to use the new scalable electric architecture, with both the 5 and 6 set to be built alongside one another in the same factory from 2026.
