New Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is luxury brand’s first electric model

The new Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV will arrive as the ultra-premium sub-brand’s first electric model, becoming the flagship EV in the Maybach line-up.

Based on the Mercedes EQS SUV, the new 4x4 has been lavishly reappointed to showcase the Maybach brand’s luxurious craftsmanship, with the firm hoping its new SUV will spearhead the premium electric SUV market.

The EQS 680 SUV delivers on the power front, with a whopping 484kW and 700 lb ft torque on tap; that makes it good for a 0-62mph spring in just 4.4sec. An astonishing figure for a car which is likely to weigh a lot more than the standard EQS SUV, which tips the scales at 2800kg.

With the same dual motor set-up and 108.4kWh battery as the EQS 580, the luxury Maybach offers a range of up to 373 miles – that’s five miles less than the standard car. A 10-80% charge using a fast charger takes around 31 minutes.

The exterior gets all the Maybach trademarks, including the brand’s standout two-tone paintwork and of course, the Maybach grille.

The grille itself is formed of vertical chrome strips, with the Maybach logo embossed above it and an LED light bar joining the two headlights together. And in true Mercedes style, the signature three-star logo sits on the bonnet.

There are flashes of chrome elements dotted around the sleek silhouette, and the alloy wheels are in-keeping with the Maybach style – buyers have a choice of 21 or 22in wheels.

Move inside and the Maybach builds on the standard car’s upmarket interior. Like the EQS 580, the Maybach 680 gets the MBUX 17in Hyperscreen covering the entire dashboard. The backrests of the front seats are also fitted with 11.6in digital displays for extra entertainment.

An 4D Burmester sound system has been added, while more chrome elements litter the inside of the Maybach SUV.

While the EQS 580 comes with seven seats, the Maybach EQS 680 is offered with just five and there is an optional four-seat layout. The seats are wrapped in luxurious Nappa leather, with rear passengers seats benefitting from a massage function, ventilation and neck and shoulder heating.

If that’s not enough for you, buyers can add the First-Class Rear package, which adds a centre console through the rear passenger seats. The package adds heated and cooled cup holders and fast charging USB-C ports. And if that's still not up to your standards, you can add two silver plated champagne goblets.

Maybach has focused heavily on ride quality, with the new SUV featuring a special new Maybach mode that has been designed to maximise driving comfort, according to the brand.

The new mode replaces the comfort programme, and ensures only minimal body movements under the seats due to a new oscillation node.

Mercedes-Maybach is yet to reveal the price for the EQS 680 SUV, but we expect it to arrive with a price tag over the £200,000 mark.
